Splitcast compares your running fitness with your fitness before past races and predicts race times. It is designed so that your health data never leaves your iPhone.
The short version
- Splitcast reads data from Apple Health to do its calculations, on your iPhone.
- It never writes to Apple Health.
- It does not send your health data, results or any other personal data to the developer or to anyone else. There are no accounts, analytics, advertising or tracking.
- Deleting the app deletes everything it stored.
What Splitcast reads from Apple Health
Only with your permission, which you can change at any time in the Settings app (Health › Data Access & Devices › Splitcast, or Privacy & Security › Health):
- Workouts and workout routes
- Heart rate, resting heart rate and heart rate variability
- VO2max
- Running power and walking/running distance
- Sleep
This data is used only to calculate the comparisons and predictions shown in the app.
What Splitcast stores on your iPhone
- A copy of the Health data above, so the app opens quickly without re-reading years of history. It is replaced each time you refresh from Health.
- Workout routes and small map images of them, in the app's cache, so maps load quickly. iOS may clear these at any time.
- Results you add or confirm (race name, date, distance and time, and any notes) and your settings, such as goal times and units.
All of this stays in the app's private storage on your iPhone. It is included in your device backups (iCloud or computer backups, if you use them) in the same way as other app data, protected by Apple's backup security. Splitcast does not sync it anywhere itself.
Widgets and notifications
- Widgets show figures the app has already worked out (predicted times, your goal, a weekly trend line), shared with the widget through the app's private storage on your iPhone.
- Goal alerts, if you turn them on, are created on your iPhone. Nothing is sent to a server.
- If "Update in the background" is on, iOS wakes Splitcast after you save a workout (and once a day) so it can update the widgets and alerts. You can turn this off in Results › Settings.
Maps
To show route maps, Splitcast uses Apple's MapKit. MapKit downloads map images from Apple for the area being shown, so Apple receives the map area requested, as it does for any app that shows a map. No health data, workout times or other personal data is sent with it. Apple's handling of map requests is covered by Apple's privacy policy.
What Splitcast does not do
- No data is sent to the developer or any server operated by the developer.
- No analytics, crash reporting SDKs, advertising or third-party tracking.
- No selling or sharing of data.
- Health data is never used for advertising or marketing, in line with Apple's HealthKit rules.
If you choose to share crash reports or analytics with developers in your iPhone's settings, Apple may pass anonymous crash reports to the developer. These do not contain your health data.
Health and medical advice
Splitcast is a training guide. Its predictions are estimates and it does not give medical advice.
Children
Splitcast is not directed at children under 13.
